About "The Grove"
Randall Lewis and his family affectionately call their 1854 Federal Style home "The Grove". This home was built by Robert Myers who was an early farmer and business man in the town of Carroll. The home is pictured above. The home remained in the Myers family and was occupied by Robert Myer's daughter Lydia Myers, who was referred to as Miss Lydia. Miss Lydia's brother, Hon. John Myers attended Harvard Law School and had a very successful law practice in the Boston area. The Myers family from the patriarch Robert down through the son John were all early members of the Republican party. It is likely that Robert Myers who was a contemporary of Ruben Fenton was instrumental in the formation of the Republican party in this area. John Myers entered politics in the Boston area being elected to the Massachusettes Assembly where he served two terms as Speaker or the Assembly. In the early 1900's, John Myers commissioned one of the first female architects in the United States to undertake a remodeling of the home. This architect was none other than Lois Lilly Howe. Mrs. Howe was not only one of the first female architects, but also was a member of a firm of architects that was exclusively female. The renovations of the home under Mrs. Howe's design included the installation of hardwood floors with geometrical designs, a grand staircase (which was allegedly constructed by craftsmen in Boston and then shipped to the home via the Erie Canal to Buffalo and the the railroad to Jamestown, finnaly making its way to the Myers home by ox and wagon). John Myers passed away before he could return to the Town of Carrol for retirement, however, Miss Lydia lived in the home until her death in 1928. On her death Miss Lydia donated property adjacent to the home and bequsted a sum of money in honor of her brother James to allow the construction of the current Myers Memorial Library building.
After the house moved out of the Myers Estate it was sold to the Danielson/Peterson Family who owned the house from the late 1920's up until almost 2000. The house then passed through a couple of owners before being purchased by Randall Lewis and his family in 2007. Currently, "The Grove" serves as the home for the Lewis family as well as a private law office for Randall S. Lewis, Esq. Over the years the home has served many different business, has been a multi-famly home, but has currently been returened to a single family home. The Lewis family hopes to have this home added to the New York and Federal Regtister of Historic Homes.
